Atlantic North Cinemark theater moving forward with construction

A new movie theater announced in 2019 is well underway, with the city issuing more than $1 million worth of permits over the past four months.

Cinemark Holdings Inc. (NYSE: CNK) previously announced plans to construct a 14-screen theater in phase two of Sleiman Enterprises’ Atlantic North shopping center. Since that time, the city has issued more than a dozen permits for a total of $11.56 million for the theater’s construction.

Located at 11567 Atlantic Blvd., the 55,663-square-foot theater will have a seating capacity of 1,348. The theater also has 515 parking spaces split between a front and rear parking lot.

The parcel is located just to the west of the existing Belk in Atlantic North, and an unspecified future outparcel is denoted on site plans under review by the city.

Since Jan. 20, the city has issued more than $1.07 million worth of permits — including plumbing, electrical, fire, roofing and mechanical permits. The initial building permit for the project, issued in October, was $8.74 million.

Kimley-Horn Associates Inc. is the engineer for the project.

When it was initially announced in March 2019, the project was expected to be open by summer 2020.

“We are excited to be a part of Atlantic North,” said Mark Zoradi, Cinemark’s CEO, in 2019. “Our Cinemark theatre will be the entertainment anchor to this impressive shopping center, providing an unparalleled entertainment experience for the eastern communities of the Jacksonville metropolitan area.”
