Harris Teeter breaks ground on East Arlington store, marking return to Jacksonville after 20 years

Harris Teeter’s long-awaited return to Jacksonville is moving ahead.

The Kroger-owned grocer has begun construction at Atlantic North in East Arlington, advancing a project that will bring the chain back to Duval County for the first time in about two decades.

The start of work at 11901 Atlantic Blvd. marks the latest milestone for a store that has been watched closely since plans surfaced last year. In March, the city approved a permit for a 61,000-square-foot grocery store center at the northwest corner of Atlantic and Kernan boulevards.

“We’re proud to partner with Harris Teeter on this milestone project,” said Toney Sleiman of Sleiman Enterprises. “Atlantic North continues to attract leading national retailers, and this development reflects the strong demand and growth we’re seeing in this area.”

For Jacksonville, the project is more than another grocery opening. It is a fresh sign that national retailers continue to see growth potential in the city’s expanding suburbs, particularly in East Arlington, where Atlantic North has been adding major tenants.

Harris Teeter is expected to bring up to 200 jobs to the area and serve the surrounding community with a full-service format centered on fresh groceries, prepared foods, bakery items and a fuel center, according to the company.

“Expanding in the Jacksonville market is an exciting step forward for us,” said Tammy DeBoer, president of Harris Teeter. “This location reflects both our strategic growth and our dedication to bringing high-quality products and incredible customer service to new communities.”

The Atlantic North store will be the second Harris Teeter in Northeast Florida, joining the company’s Fernandina Beach location.

A ceremonial groundbreaking is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at Atlantic North Shopping Center.
